Which schemes are running, and for how long

Two of the largest end in March 2027 with no confirmed successor. A job planned for the other side of that date is a job planned without funding.

Four systems, not one

The same house gets a different answer in each nation

Energy policy is devolved, so what you can claim turns on which side of a border you live as much as on the property itself.

    England

    Heat pump support runs through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, and the rest is split between supplier obligations and council-run funds.

    The same GB-wide schemes as England, plus Nest, the Welsh Government's own route for households on low incomes.

    Scotland

    A separate system end to end: grants and interest-free loans through Home Energy Scotland, with a rural uplift.

    Northern Ireland

    Neither ECO nor the Boiler Upgrade Scheme apply. Support comes through supplier-funded rounds and Housing Executive schemes.

What you can claim

Every measure, against every nation

A blank cell is the honest answer: nothing pays towards that measure there. Glazing is the clearest example — only Scotland and Northern Ireland fund it at all.

Appearing in a cell means the scheme can fund that measure, not that your household qualifies. Most of these have an income or property test on top.

Eligibility

Six things decide what you can claim

Almost none of them are about the product you want. They are about the property, the household and where the boundary line falls.

  • Which nation you live in

    Support is devolved. The same house gets a different answer in Glasgow, Cardiff, Belfast and Leeds.

  • Who owns the property

    Some schemes are for owner-occupiers, some run through landlords, and a few are open to private tenants.

  • Income and benefits

    The biggest packages are means-tested. Others, like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, are open to anyone who qualifies on the property.

  • Your energy rating

    Several schemes use your EPC band, and some use your council tax band, to decide whether the home is eligible at all.

  • How the home is heated now

    Off-grid oil and LPG homes, and homes with electric heating, are treated differently from those on mains gas.

  • Who does the work

    Most schemes only pay out if the installer holds the right certification, and some claim the money on your behalf.

Gone, but still being searched for

Knowing a scheme has closed is as useful as knowing one exists. These come up constantly in searches and in quotes from installers working from old notes.

  1. Green Homes Grant

    Closed2020–2021

    England

    Vouchers of up to £5,000 for insulation and low-carbon heating. Closed after six months with a small fraction of the budget spent, having been blamed on an administration process installers could not work with.

  2. Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive

    Closed2014–2022

    England, Wales and Scotland

    Paid quarterly over seven years for the heat a renewable system generated, rather than a lump sum up front. Households already accredited continue to receive payments to the end of their term.

    England

    Council-delivered funding for low-income households off the gas grid. Ran in two phases and was folded into the Warm Homes programme.

    Three phases of council-run retrofit funding aimed at low-income households in EPC band D to G. Its successor takes the same shape with a longer funding commitment.

    The previous phase of the supplier obligation, which funded single measures rather than whole-house plans. The move to whole-house under ECO4 cut the number of homes reached and raised the impact per home.

Common questions

Can I get a grant if I'm not on benefits?
Yes, for some schemes. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme, the Home Energy Scotland grant and zero-rated VAT are not means-tested. ECO4, Nest, Warmer Homes Scotland, Affordable Warmth and most council-run funds are.
Can I claim more than one grant for the same job?
Sometimes. Schemes will not fund the same measure twice, but a grant for a heat pump and separate support for insulation can sit alongside each other, and 0% VAT applies on top of almost everything. Each scheme page lists what it stacks with and what it conflicts with.
Why do the amounts differ so much between nations?
Energy policy is devolved. Scotland runs its own grant and loan instead of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, Wales routes households through Nest, and Northern Ireland has neither ECO nor BUS. The same house gets four different answers.
Will a grant cover the whole cost?
It depends on the scheme. The fully funded packages — ECO4, Nest, Warmer Homes Scotland, Affordable Warmth — are aimed at low-income households and cover the work outright. The open schemes pay a fixed contribution and leave you the rest.
What if I rent?
Private tenants can qualify for some schemes directly, and for others the landlord has to apply or contribute. Social housing is covered by funds paid to the landlord, so the work is planned rather than applied for.
How often do the rules change?
Often. Amounts, qualifying benefits and end dates all move, and schemes are replaced outright. Every scheme here carries the date we last read its published rules, and a log of what changed.
